What is standard shopping campaign?

A standard shopping campaign is a Google Ads campaign that shows product listings from your Merchant Center feed on search results, with direct control over product grouping, bids and negative keywords.

Splitting a catalogue by how much attention it deserves

Say a store has 1,800 products in its feed and runs them all in one campaign at one bid. The best sellers and the forgotten long tail compete for the same budget, and the products that make the most money get whatever is left after everything else has spent.

A structured alternative splits the same catalogue into tiers. About 120 proven best sellers go into their own campaign with the highest priority and the closest attention. Around 640 steady mid range products sit in a second campaign. The remaining 1,040 slow movers go into a third with a low bid, there to catch the occasional specific search rather than to carry the account.

Now each tier can carry its own budget and its own target, negative keywords can push generic searches away from the expensive tier, and a product that starts selling can be promoted upward. None of that is possible in one flat campaign.

The counts here are made up to show the shape.

Why it matters

Standard shopping campaigns are the version of paid search where a store keeps control, and control is what makes the visitors lever predictable. You can see every search term, exclude the ones that waste money, bid differently on products with different margins, and know exactly which products your spend went to.

That visibility feeds the other levers too. Search term reports show the words real buyers use, which belongs in product titles and collection page copy. Product level performance shows which items deserve better images or a clearer description, which is conversion work you would not otherwise have prioritised.

For a store owner the choice between this and a more automated campaign type is a real decision with trade offs, not a matter of fashion. Standard campaigns cost more attention and give more evidence. That evidence is usually worth having while you are still learning what your catalogue can do.

Common mistakes

  • Running the whole catalogue in one product group at one bid. The account then has no way to spend more on the products that earn and less on the ones that do not.
  • Skipping negative keywords. Without them, broad and irrelevant searches quietly take a share of the budget every day and the account average looks worse than the good traffic deserves.
  • Leaving out of stock or unprofitable products in the campaign. They collect impressions and clicks that could have gone to items you can actually sell at a margin.
  • Treating the feed as separate from the campaign. Titles, images, product types and prices decide which searches you appear for, so most campaign problems are really feed problems.
