SEO vs paid for a new store
If the store needs orders inside the next three months, buy the traffic. Search results take months to move even when the work is right, and a new domain with thin product pages has nothing ranking to improve. Paid channels tell you within weeks which products sell, which queries convert and what a customer costs, and that knowledge is exactly what makes later search work cheap.
That does not mean postponing search entirely. The foundations are the same work you already owe your customers: correct titles, real descriptions, category pages that exist, product data that is complete, a store that loads quickly on a phone. Do that once at launch and every future channel benefits.
The order that works for most new stores is paid for demand now, foundations for search in parallel, and deliberate content only once paid data has shown which words buyers actually use.
Choose
Paid traffic
when
- You need revenue within the next quarter to fund stock or fixed costs
- You do not yet know which products in the range will sell
- There is existing search demand for the product type you can pay to appear in
- You need customer data quickly to build email and audience lists
- Stock is seasonal and the window closes before search results could move
Choose
SEO
when
- You have runway to wait months for the first meaningful visitors
- The category has steady search demand that is not dominated by paid results
- You can produce genuinely useful buying guidance, not thin pages
- Your margin cannot carry ongoing media spend at current click prices
- You already rank for a few terms and want to build on something real
| Criterion | Paid traffic | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Continuous media spend, and traffic stops the day you stop paying | Time and content cost up front, then traffic with no per click charge |
| Setup effort | Tracking, a product feed, campaign structure, creative | Site structure, product data, page speed, category copy, internal links |
| Time to signal | One to three weeks for the first readable results | Three to six months before rankings and traffic move meaningfully |
| Control | You choose spend, products and where ads appear, and can change it today | You control the pages, not the ranking, and results arrive on their own schedule |
| Best for | Proving demand, seasonal ranges, funding early growth | Durable traffic in categories with steady search demand |
| What can go wrong | Spend scales before the store converts, and every extra visitor loses money | Months of content that ranks for words nobody buys from |
| How we measure it | Cost per first order and new customers per week | Ranked queries with buying intent, and organic sessions to product and category pages |
When both apply
Run them together with different jobs and different clocks. Paid pays this quarter's bills and produces the query data. Search work uses that data so the pages you write are aimed at words that already convert in the ad account.
The handover is the point. Export the search terms that produced orders, and turn the recurring ones into category pages, filters and buying guidance. Over time, the terms you rank for take pressure off the paid budget, and you can hold spend on the queries that search will never win.
