How a packaging buyer places an order

A packaging supply store sells by dimension. The buyer already knows the box has to be twelve by nine by six inches in a 32 ECT board, and they need five hundred of them before this week's orders ship. Almost nobody browses. They search the size, check the price per bundle, look at what the freight will cost and buy from whoever can get it on a truck first.

We write growth plans for packaging suppliers that already sell online. The plan covers a feed where the dimensions and the board grade sit at the front of the title, product pages that state bundle quantity and pallet quantity in plain numbers, freight rules that do not ambush the buyer at checkout, custom print quoting with honest plate charges and lead times, and reorder flows built on how fast each customer burns through stock.

It also covers peak, when every shipper you supply buys ahead and still runs short in the last week.

The order begins in a warehouse, not an office. Someone walks the packing benches, sees the stack of one size getting low, and works out how many weeks of stock are left against the outbound volume. The reorder is a size and a quantity, and the search is the same: the three dimensions, sometimes with the board grade or the mil thickness attached.

Price is compared per unit, not per bundle, so a store quoting a bundle of twenty five and a store quoting a bundle of fifty look nothing alike until the buyer does the division. Freight then changes the answer again. Packaging is light for its size, so parcel carriers charge on dimensional weight and anything over a couple of bundles moves better on a pallet. A buyer who gets to the payment page and finds a freight charge they did not expect abandons and starts again elsewhere.

Storage limits the order. Most warehouses cannot hold a truckload of boxes, so buyers order often rather than deeply, unless a price break or a peak season justifies filling a corner of the racking.

Custom printed stock is a different purchase. It carries a plate or die charge, a minimum run and a lead time in weeks, and it is reordered before the last carton is opened rather than after.

Where packaging supply stores
lose revenue

The four levers, in this niche.

Visitors

Visitors: the dimensions are the search term

People type sizes. A twelve by nine by six carton, a ten by thirteen poly mailer, eighty gauge stretch film, two inch tape at 2.6 mil. Product titles and headings that lead with the dimensions in the format buyers write them, including the common variants with and without spaces, are the ones that get matched. Shopping campaigns split by material family so corrugated, mailers, film, tape, void fill and labels each carry their own budget, because a box search and a tape search convert at very different order sizes and need different bids.

Conversion rate

Conversion: show the unit price and the freight before checkout

Two things lose the order on a packaging site: an unclear pack quantity and a surprise freight charge. We put the per unit price next to the bundle price, state the bundle and pallet quantities on the tile as well as the page, and quote real shipping in the cart including the point where a pallet becomes cheaper than parcel. Stock is shown by warehouse so the buyer knows which location it ships from and when it lands. Approved accounts see their tier price on login and can enter a PO instead of a card.

Average order

Order value: sell the packing bench, not the box

A packing station needs a carton, a void fill, a tape, a dispenser and a label. Order value rises when the box page shows the tape width that suits that flute and the amount of paper or air pillow needed to fill that cube, with a quantity that matches the box count. Price breaks at bundle, layer and pallet are shown as a table so the buyer can see where the next tier begins. Saved lists per station let a warehouse manager rebuy the whole bench in one action.

Repeat purchases

Repeat purchases: reorder on burn rate, not on a calendar

Packaging is consumed at the speed of the customer's own outbound orders, so the useful reminder is timed to their burn rate. The order history gives you weeks of cover per size, and a reminder just before cover runs out, with the last quantities loaded, saves a warehouse manager a job. A pre peak flow starts well before the customer's busiest quarter with a stock up quantity and a delivery window. Custom printed items get their own reminder pegged to the run size, since the reprint takes weeks.

What we do for
packaging supply stores

Five channels, one plan.

Google Shopping and search

Google Shopping and search ads for packaging supply

Shopping carries most of the demand because the query is a size and the tile can show the size, the pack quantity and the price. Titles lead with the dimensions and the material, then the grade and the pack: 12 x 9 x 6 Corrugated Shipping Box, 32 ECT, Bundle of 25. Campaigns are split by material family so film, tape, mailers, void fill and cartons hold separate budgets, and cheap high volume consumables never sit in the same ad group as printed or specialty stock.

Search ads take the questions a tile cannot answer: which board grade for a heavy item, what gauge of film for a pallet load, whether a mailer is curbside recyclable. Copy states the pack quantity, the freight threshold and the cut off for same day dispatch, because the buyer is choosing on arrival date as much as price. Negatives strip out moving house and single box consumer intent, which is heavy in this category and never turns into an account. Budget lifts in the months before your customers' peak shipping season and holds through it.

Meta and TikTok

Meta and TikTok ads for packaging supply

Paid social works here as an account building channel rather than a checkout channel. A warehouse manager does not open a feed to buy tape, but they do notice content about cutting damage rates, reducing dimensional weight, and setting up a bench that ships faster. Retargeting brings back visitors who priced a size and did not order, showing the pallet price and the freight rule rather than a discount.

Custom audiences built from your account list reach existing customers before their peak with a stock up message and their own usual sizes. TikTok is useful indirectly: small brands post packing videos constantly, and a supplier whose branded mailers and tissue appear in those videos earns searches later. Creative should show real work, a carton being erected, a pallet being wrapped, a printed mailer coming off the line, and should name the size on screen so the viewer can search for it.

Merchant Center and the feed

Merchant Center and the feed for packaging supply

Packaging feeds fail on quantity confusion and shipping data. Use multipack to declare how many units are in a bundle and unit_pricing_measure so the tile can show a per box or per roll price, otherwise your bundle of fifty looks expensive beside a competitor's single unit listing. Product dimensions and shipping weight need to be accurate, because carriers price this category on volume and Google will use those values to estimate delivery cost.

Sizes of the same board grade sit under one item_group_id with the size in the description and title, each row carrying its own availability. The feed price must be a price any visitor can pay on the landing page, so tier pricing that appears after login cannot be the feed price. Items that ship only on a pallet by freight need shipping settings that reflect that, or they will be advertised with a delivery estimate you cannot meet. Images should show the flat blank and the erected box, with a scale reference.

SEO and AI search

SEO and AI search for packaging supply

The winning organic asset is a size finder plus honest reference content. Buyers and assistants ask what size box fits a given product with padding, what ECT rating a fifty pound load needs, what gauge of stretch film holds a pallet at a given height, and which mailer is accepted in curbside recycling. Answer each on its own page, opening with the direct answer and linking to the products that match.

Every size gets a real page rather than a variant hidden behind a dropdown, because that is what an exact dimension search lands on. Write the dimension in the heading in more than one format so both writing conventions match. Category pages explain how to read a board grade and when double wall is worth the cost. A dimensional weight page with a worked example, using the reader's own numbers, is the sort of content assistants quote. Publish material certifications and food contact statements as page text as well as a downloadable document.

Email and SMS

Email and SMS for packaging supply

Email is where the repeat revenue is, because packaging is bought again and again in the same sizes. Build the core flow on cover: from the order history, work out how many weeks of each size a customer holds, and send a prefilled cart shortly before it runs out. Send it per bench, grouping the carton with the tape and the fill, since that is how the warehouse restocks.

A pre peak flow goes out ahead of the customer's own busy season with a larger quantity and a booked delivery slot, and a second one goes near the end of peak for the sizes people always underbuy. Custom printed customers get a reprint reminder based on how long their last run lasted, with the artwork and plate already on file so the reorder is a confirmation rather than a project. Price movement in paper and resin is worth an honest heads up email rather than silence. SMS is reserved for delivery windows on freight orders, where someone has to be at the dock.

First three fixes

What the plan usually starts with for packaging supply stores.

  1. Pack quantity hidden until the cart

Listings that show a bundle price without saying it is a bundle read as expensive, and listings that show a unit price without saying the minimum is fifty read as a bait. We put pack quantity and per unit price on the tile, the page and the feed, so the buyer can compare correctly on the first screen.

  2. Freight surprises at checkout

Bulky low value goods break flat rate shipping, so buyers reach the payment page and leave. We set weight and dimension based rates, show the pallet threshold where freight becomes cheaper than parcel, and offer will call collection where you have a warehouse, so the cost is known before the buyer commits.

  3. Custom print handled entirely by email

Printed carton and mailer enquiries arrive as free text and take days to price. We build a structured quote request that captures size, quantity, colours and in hands date, return the quote as a cart the buyer can approve against a purchase order, and set a reprint reminder based on the run length.

Questions from packaging supply stores

Lead with the three dimensions in the order buyers use, then the material and the board grade, then the pack quantity. Include both the spaced and unspaced forms somewhere in the page text, since people type sizes both ways, and give every size its own indexable page rather than hiding it in a variant dropdown.

Yes, as long as the price in the feed is one any visitor can see and pay on the landing page without logging in. Keep the public price as the feed price and let account tiers apply after sign in. A feed price that only exists behind a login causes price mismatch disapprovals across the account.

Build negative lists around house moving, storage and single unit intent, and structure campaigns so bulk corrugated is never in the same ad group as small quantity items. Ad copy that states the pack quantity up front also filters clicks, because someone who wants one box will not click a bundle of fifty.

Ahead of their own peak, not yours. Work backwards from each account's busiest shipping months in their order history and send the stock up prompt with enough lead time to book freight and clear rack space. A second, smaller prompt near the end of peak catches the sizes buyers always underestimate.

What size carton suits a specific product with protective fill, what board grade a given weight needs, what stretch film gauge holds a pallet at a certain height, and whether a mailer can go in curbside recycling. Pages that answer those directly, with the matching products named, are what an assistant can cite.
